Polymarket Denounced for Booking Bets on Sex Toy Throwing at WNBA Games
Prediction markets operator Polymarket is taking advantage of a recent surge in sex toy throwing at WNBA games by issuing event contracts on those instances, much to the chagrin of some WNBA fans and certain "judges" in the court of public opinion.
Sex toy tossing by spectators at WNBA games has increased since late July. The alleged thrower was arrested in a Tuesday incident at the Phoenix Mercury game after the object allegedly injured a guy and his niece, who is nine years old. Polymarket, which hasn't hesitated to place bets on contentious events, joined in.
"Announcing: Dildo dailies,” the Polymarket Sports X account posted on Wednesday. “You can now bet on which day(s) dildos will hit the WNBA court.”
WNBA fans took exception with that, with one tweeter claiming that Polymarket's marketing tactic was offensive to WNBA players. Betting on whether or how many of the non-family-friendly devices would be used during games is tantamount to incentivizing bad conduct, according to another commenter.
The popular WNBA Sex Toy Throwing Bets on Polymarket
As of late Thursday, over $500,000 worth of event contracts connected to sex toys were traded on Polymarket, demonstrating that people are willing to wager on anything. There have been cases in recent days where Polymarket has seen more activity on contracts for throwing sex toys than on derivatives related to the real WNBA games.
Polymarket hasn't canceled the contracts in spite of the criticism. As evidenced by the approximately $63,000 in linked transactions for the Friday games as of this writing, there is actually a lot of activity in the market for the WNBA's weekend schedule. The Polymarket table below shows that "no" wagers are preferred by bettors.
Sex toy throwing bets on WNBA games remain popular on Polymarket.
There is a sex toy-related qualifier that could affect the results, so traders and bettors thinking about the event contracts should be careful.
“This market will resolve to ‘Yes’ if a dildo is thrown onto the court during a WNBA game on the listed date (ET). Otherwise, it will resolve to ‘No,’” according to Polymarket. “A qualifying object is exclusively a dildo, defined as an object shaped like an erect penis used for sexual stimulation. Other sex toys will not qualify.”
Some WNBA Incidents Are Caused by Memecoin Groups
To be fair, Polymarket is not the only business that is generating money off of the WNBA sex toy issue. Before Polymarket entered the battle, some offshore bookies were already doing this. Rumor has it that bettors have embraced the more than five such markets that at least one offshore book has made available.
Separately, the WNBA sex toy scandal serves as another illustration of the lengths some people will go to in order to profit in the current cryptocurrency frenzy. The perpetrators of a memecoin called Green Dildo Coin are to blame for recent incidents.
Since Green Dildo Coin has more than doubled in value over the last week and skyrocketed nearly 86% today, they were successful in achieving their goal.
